Our Japanese program in San José State University has been implementing a Japanese culture course using COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) approach since 2012in order to develop our students' Intercultural competence and relative point-of-view, in response to the recent trend of globalization and the increasing number of students seeking employment overseas. This session introduces the merits of COIL and the theoretical frameworks, as well as knowledge and task sequences that consist of our Japanese culture course, showing the videos of the actual activities, such as a quiz activity of each area and school, self and group introduction, proverb exchange that they think represent each culture and they like, and interview and discussion on their research topic on Japanese culture.
