Rewards in the form of gold stars, other tangible goods, or even verbal praise are prevalent in our classrooms. However, we seldom stop to consider the negative impacts of such practice. Instead of devising yet another elaborate behavior modification plan such as a token economy, we can cultivate intrinsic motivation via the use of differentiated instruction. The presenters will share with the audience research findings on rewards and how to use differentiated instruction to engage and assess students for mastery learning.
